Descend into Nihilism: The music launches from a guitar solo introduced with a semi dissonant note upon its up-tempo thrash melody. Originally titled, “Chemical death”, the new lyrics describe the moment of death, of an instinctive vain resistance to mortality and the loss of corporeal colouring of perception that betrays sensation as without context beyond the confounding narrative of consciousness. Death is rebirth into the truth of nihilism, a formless void of which the material realm is but a phantasmic elaboration. The lyric’s imagery is inspired both by the first canto of Dante’s Inferno, when the author is rescued from the dark wood of uncertainty by Virgil’s shade and by Goethe’s poem, The Elf King, in which a father cradling his ailing son, vainly attempts to out-gallop, death.

Stalked by dread steps of the inexorable fiend
I travail the ascent through foetid opacities
Collected on my gasps and wept through close wood
Obscuring the wended path
Murmuring against my chest
Warm and vulnerable
I cradle life precious against the gloom
Beyond its cloying miasma
The crystalline air sears my skin
Echoing fevered exertion into rarefied silence
Cast in malevolent shades
The colourless twilight effaced of detail
Harbours covetous eyes beguiled by my flight
Resistless they close
Predators lurking without my defensive stroke

Patiently pressing their appetite
Ensnared I stumble and plummet upon a lurching nausea
Cloaked in abysmal darkness that defied all sensation
Save the anxiety of falling
Heightened with each passing instance
It fulminates a negating pause
On whose whisper dissolves my very essence
Warmth spills regretfully
Inviting austere cold
The heat of blood vented and viscous
That animated and encircled
Defining the narrative of self
Projects its sanguine film over all perception
Its sublimates into frigid clarity

Swathed in meter-less rhythms of uninhibited sensation
Indifferent and omniscient
Betraying objects without context
Stimulates without instruction
Beyond ambition and hope
Without fear or loathing
Upon the formless void that alone exists
